Artist Statement
Women who hold their ground in a world that keeps shifting around them. Not as muses or symbols, but as the ones who steadily remain.
Powerful, bold, seductive, and at the same time deeply vulnerable. Women are the central force in Birgitta Sundström Jansdotter's paintings. Working across figuration and symbol, she explores the weight of human relationships and the unspoken politics of traditional female roles. These figures look back at the viewer with a composure that feels earned, not posed.
Twins appear throughout as recurring presences, functioning as mirrors or shadows. Around them, archetypal animals materialise from the same painted world: wolves, moose, birds that carry the charge of instinct and untamed nature. The process is slow and deliberate, built up in layers over months and years, scraped back and reworked until something essential and irreducible remains.
The result is work that feels simultaneously ancient and urgent, layered with psychological weight that rewards sustained looking.

Critical Reception
"Birgitta zet haar beeldschone vrouwen in een vervreemdende omgeving. What you see is not what you get."
Roos van Put · Editor-in-chief Kunstbeeld (2008–2013) · Opening speech, NOCTURNE, Pulchri Studio, The Hague, 2012
"Degenen die binnen een klassieke techniek toch een sterk authentiek geluid laten horen — dat zijn onder andere Birgitta Sundström Jansdotter."
Roos van Put · Editor-in-chief Kunstbeeld (2008–2013) · Haagse Courant, 2006

Birgitta Sundström Jansdotter is a Swedish-born, living in The Netherlands contemporary figurative painter whose work centers on archetypal female presence within layered symbolic environments. Her paintings are defined by anonymous women who meet the viewer's gaze with composure and psychological steadiness. These figures function not as traditional portraits, but as structural anchors within complex pictorial fields.
By stripping her subjects of geographical and biographical specificity, Jansdotter suspends them between individuality and universality. Surrounding these central presences, dynamic spatial systems unfold in which mythological references, animal forms, fragments of contemporary life, and subconscious imagery coexist. The resulting works operate as psychological ecosystems, balancing flux and stability, movement and stillness.
Monumental compositions, simplified forms, and a concentrated emphasis on the gaze create a direct encounter between figure and viewer. Her process is intuitive yet extended; paintings evolve through layering, erasure, and revision until a state of structural equilibrium is reached.
Jansdotter has exhibited internationally in museums, galleries, and art fairs across Europe, Asia, and the United States. She has received multiple art awards in Sweden and the Netherlands, including the Jacob Hartog Prize (2007) and the Culture Award of Zuidplas (2017). Her work is held in museum and public collections in the Netherlands, Germany and Sweden, including Museum Hannover, the Bene-Stiftung Hamburg, Museum Gouda and municipalities in Sweden and the Netherlands, as well as private collections in the Netherlands and internationally.
Her practice repositions the female figure at the center of the visual field, not as muse or metaphor, but as enduring presence within complexity.
Critical Reception
"Jansdotter's hybrid paintings tell us stories about the joys and sorrows of human relationships. She places emphasis on the roles and stereotypes women have been traditionally assigned, find themselves in now and should be claiming for themselves in future."
